i have mastered a strategy in the standard game style.... more appropriate for medium and large maps... but i have done it on a tiny map as well - but it is more risky then...

some important elements for this..

the income strategy

1) buy only cheap leaders.... best ones are fighters lvl1.... good expensive leaders - and never many of them include: demon lvl1 - the best... necro lvl1 or lvl3 - not great but decent - a summoner is needed.... elementalist lvl1 - higher level if not possible for lvl1 - important to get free craggy peaks and train small dragons - great dragons later... pyro lvl1... or lvl3... a leader to conquer new territories with 0 or nearly insignificant army... and going to the land and sea as well... same applies with demons and small dragons....

avoid like hell, seers, sorcerers (i had two of them this round since i kept getting them in the first rounds so i had to buy them anyway.... useless wizars though..).. gate mages lvl1 are useless... lvl2s may be good but not really necessary -depends if you have found tall white obelisks...

2) you aim for high income territories... you avoid difficult territories OR you get only one-two of them....

best territories to train and what:
grasslands: soldiers
plains: soldiers
mountains: dwarf warriors (not mountain trolls)
desert: sand worms
glade: dark elves (prolly the best territory)
craggy peak: small dragons
impassable peaks (only with the help of an elementalist that's possible): great dragons

best territories for income (most important)
grasslands
plains
woodlands
forests

3) starting the round...

best is to split your army and start with 2 or 3 cheap fighters... i started last round with 3 lvl1 fighters... this round with one lvl1 sorcerer (they stink...lol)...

you attack a very easy province (the first tic you got a spy spell) with a leader with few or no army... while you send the rest of your army to another side...(the 3rd either on a side or he starts recruiting..)

avoid by all means to go directly on craggy peaks... they can make you lose a tic by not founding the path to them... or kill your army with a huge garrison...

the way to have craggy peaks... is to have an elementalist.... do NOT try to conquer it...

also... have in mind that luck plays a role...

i tend to gamble...

a grassland can have one peasant (no defence)..
or 11 soldiers.... that can cause your army to perish.... but it happens...

but do not go to mountains, desert or any other high powered territory if you do not know what there is there, or without a good army and your main leader..... i tend to conquer one of difficult ones in the start to use it as a recruitment point... but i avoid go to more of them without having an experienced leader with good army...

4) after the first 20 tics... at least

if you are lucky... and you did what i told you... you have 8-9 leaders or even 10... all cheap ones... spreaded across the territories doing different things.. i had once 10 leaders with a maintenance cost of 24...lol.... (8 lvl1 fighters , 1 lvl2 fighter and 1 lvl1 elementalist...hehe)..

after the first 20-30 tics... getting summoners is not really worthwile... they are very good on the 5-10 tics...

so... you got low maintenance cost... 25-40....

and high income... at least 80...

and very high coffers as well...

so... you issue 1 or two leaders to build for a start (i start when i first take my 7th or 8th leader usually)... and slowly you get more on the building business... and you build 3 times at each province... getting castles...

you do not need your money for anything else anymore... so... use it all!!!

build like hell... slowly at start, then in full force....

if you start it on the optimum time like i did this round... you do not need more than 5 leaders to build.... but they will build for a long time...

in last roundm i was doing quests too..

right now... i did not...

i tend to do quests - the easy or medium difficulty ones... when:
1) i have the main leader and i do not lose the opportunity of much income soon... means i have started very well...
2) i have more than decent army...
3) i do not do it for more than 3 times... no more for 3 tics wasted on quests....
4) they are close to my citadel... so i can drop or transfer an item back to it fast enough (some items are great for demonologists or necromancers..)..

P.S: I hope the castle win will cease to exist....

but even without castle win... the above strat works well...

Nice stuff. I use many of the suggestions you make. Any new player would do well to read this. we should just keep the post alive (we being the 5 or so playing every round ;) )

Only thing id disagree with is the higher the level of your leader and if they have high leadership you always recruit high numbers of recuits as supposed to maybe 1 or 2 with level 1s
